Travel Tips On How To Save Money When Traveling

If you read my previous posts, then you already know how to travel on a budget, but have you ever thought that you can actually save money when traveling?

Check out my travel tips and tricks!

1. Avoid shopping in touristic places at all costs

Locals love tourists. Not because they can sell better, but because in almost every touristic place, the prices are higher than usually.

However, if you want to visit these areas, be careful how you spend your money.

The best tip I can give you is to see first what are the prices in the area, and then even try to negotiate (when possible) for a cheaper price.

2. Spend wisely

If I am being honest, I would say I love spending money on souvenirs and coffees, and I think I am not the only one…

In order to save money, I am choosing wisely the souvenirs I really want and I usually buy them at the end of my trips. Like this, I can focus on saving money for later.

When it comes to cafes, I do my research and I try to find the perfect vibes. But, in the same time, I try to find the cafes on my own, and I rarely go to the most famous ones. They are usually popular because of their location or marketing, but this does not mean I cannot find other hidden gems.

For example, in Bali we found a hidden gem: a café with a waterfall view. We did not find it by chance…a local told us about it when we asked where else can we eat in the area. In general, the cafes on the main road are very popular, but there are many other places with amazing views and good coffee or food.

3. Plan your budget daily and set a “safety net” - probably one of the best travel tips ever!

Plan and write down your daily budget and set a “safety net” just in case. In almost every single trip we encountered a problem that would make us spend more than we planned.

For example, when we had to come back from Bali the first time, our first plane was cancelled a few hours before departure. As we had a connecting flight, we had to book another flight from Bali to Jakarta that day, which made us spend more than planned.

4. Search for alternatives

For every plan you have always search for a cheaper alternative, because it usually exists Ask locals, read more, adapt your route if you can.

For example, when we had to come back to Romania from Bali, we found it cheaper to fly to Malaysia and then to book a flight home. This way, we visited a new country and we got a cheaper plane ticket.

Another example is related to our trip to the Komodo Island in Indonesia. We made a reservation for a one‑day trip with a shared boat for about 100 euros per person, but we kept asking about a cheaper offer. We talked at the reception of our hotel, and we were given a contact of someone offering us the same services (except for the boat that was a wooden boat and not a fast one) for about 30 euros per person.
