III. Things To Do In Ras Al Khaimah
Visit Al Jazeera Al Hamra
Al Jazeera Al Hamra, the last standing authentic village in the UAE, is situated along the coast of Ras Al Khaimah, approximately 30 kilometers south of the city center.
The town has a rich history dating back several centuries and depicts the classical architecture and traditional lifestyle in the Middle East through well-preserved coral stone houses and historic landmarks.
Dating back to the 17th century, the pearling village is a living museum featuring elements of a traditional village such as:
1. A fortress
2. A small market
3. Several mosques
4. Traditional houses
With the discovery of oil in the Arabian Peninsula, many residents of Al Jazeera Al Hamra began to migrate to modern urban centers, leaving the town largely abandoned.
Due to its well-preserved historic architecture, Al Jazeera Al Hamra has served as a filming location for various movies and documentaries set in the Middle East.
Last but not least, Ras Al Khaimah annual art festival is organised in Al Jazeera Al Hamrah. The entrance is free, so if you are an art passionate and want to dive in the history of UAE, make sure to add this pearling village on your bucket list.
Visit Dhayah Fort
Dhayah Fort is a historic fortress located in Ras Al Khaimah. It is one of the oldest archaeological sites in the UAE and holds significant cultural and historical importance for the region.
Situated near the town of Dhayah, approximately 20 kilometers north of Ras Al Khaimah city, the fort is strategically positioned on top of a hill overlooking the surrounding plains and mountains.
Dhayah Fort is the only hill fort remaining in the UAE and has an impressive history as it dates back from the late bronze age (1600 – 1300 BC). The fort was constructed using locally sourced coral stones, mud-bricks, and palm trunks. It follows a traditional Arabian architectural style, featuring watchtowers, thick walls, and defensive structures.
Dhayah Fort is today a popular tourist attraction in Ras Al Khaimah. As the fort stands on a 70-metre high hill, visitors can climb to the top of the fort to enjoy panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and learn about its historical significance through informational displays and exhibits.
